Timeline of activities

There's a lot going on to plan the new library. Here are some of the activities:

  • July 7 2005: The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners vote d on applications for state construction grants. Belmont's application was approved and the town is 13th on a waiting list of 25 communities. More information...
  • April 2005: Town Meeting approves the grant application and preliminary design concept.
  • April 2005: Board of Selectmen, Warrant Committee and Capital Budget Committee all vote to support the warrant article approving the grant application and preliminary design concept. Each committee votes with the understanding the there is no commitment to move the library project sooner in the Town's planning queue.
  • March 2005: The Dustan Library Leadership Challenge is met, bringing a total of $500,000.
  • February, 2005: Construction grant application submitted to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The grant award is expected to be $4.6M.
  • January 2005: The Dustan Library Leadership Challenge is offered by the estate of Jane Gray Dustan, long-time library supporter. A $250,000 grant is available if the Foundation can raise the same amount by the end of May, 2005.
  • January 2005: The Trustees begin showing the preliminary design to the public and to Town boards and committees, including Board of Selectmen, Permanent Building Committee, Conservation Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • January 2005: The Trustees unanimously approve the preliminary design recommended by the Feasibility Study Committee.
  • Summer, 2004: Library Trustees establish the Feasibility Study Committee to work with architect J. Stewart Roberts on a schematic design, which is required for the grant application.
  • Summer, 2004: Library Site Planning Committee studies possible sites and determines that the existing site is the best choice.
  • September 2004: Belmont Library Foundation incorporates as a non-profit organization to promote the construction and endowment of a new public library in Belmont.
